Keep Your Kitchen Air Fresh This Holiday Season

The holidays are all about gathering in the kitchen — baking cookies, roasting turkeys, and cooking those big family feasts. But with all that extra activity, your range hood’s ventilation unit will be working overtime. Proper kitchen ventilation is key to keeping your home comfortable, smoke-free, and safe from lingering odors.

Why Proper Ventilation Matters

As the heart of your home gets busier, the air in your kitchen can quickly fill with smoke, grease, and steam. A high-quality ventilation system helps remove airborne contaminants and excess heat, making your cooking space cleaner and more enjoyable. Whether you’re cooking on gas or electric, ensuring your range hood has the right power (measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM) is essential.

Finding the Right CFM

To determine the correct CFM for your ventilation unit when you have a gas cooktop:

Add together the BTUs of your cooktop burners.
Divide that number by 100.
Your CFM should be within 100 of that total.

For example, if your cooktop produces 60,000 BTUs, you’ll want a ventilation unit around 600 CFM.

To determine the correct CFM for your ventilation unit when you have an Electric cooktop:

Take the width of your cooktop and multiply it by 10.

For example, if you have a 36" wide cooktop, you will need 360 CFM

Electric cooktops require less power — typically 390–400 CFM will do the trick. Gas cooktops, however, need more. We don’t recommend using a recirculating unit with gas. For best performance, aim for at least 600 CFM with a ducted system.

Proper Sizing and Installation

Your ventilation unit should always be at least as wide as your cooktop to ensure maximum coverage. For best results, install your range hood 30–36 inches above your cooktop surface. This allows for optimal air capture and efficient ventilation.
